On 3 December 2024 at 11:00 PM local time, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, sparking public protests and widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.
After a unanimous vote by the National Assembly to overturn the martial law declaration and mounting public pressure, President Yoon rescinded the declaration on Wednesday, 4 December.
An impeachment bill has been submitted to Parliament, with voting expected either on 6 or 7 December.
